Building: Making, Stretching, Texturing

Page history last edited by Joe Essid 15 years, 5 months ago

Making objects is simple. Doing things with them is not. This part of the guide will show some "Building 101" techniques. Note for extra credit seekers: I'm still roughing this draft up, so no credit for my flubs until I remove this statement :D

URGENT Note: For Eng. 103, you may only build, and have items endure and not return to your inventory, in the plot of land to the left of Pappy's junkyard.  Be sure you have your "Invented Worlds" group active whenever you build here. Go to the edit-->groups option from the menus on the top of your screen.

URGENT Note 2: Also be certain you select the "share with group" checkbox in the build window's "General" tab when you create an object. That way others in our group can help you edit.

How to start:

  • Right click (apple click on a Mac) the ground and select "create":

  • Pick the basic shape you wish from the top of the build window and click again. Instant plywood box!

How to change the object's color and texture:

  • Select the "texture" tab and pick color. Then find a color you wish. Note that for your photos, you'll want the color to be white and the texture to be the photo you upload:

  • To change texture, pick the texture tab, pick the texture window under that tab, and then pick the texture you want out of your inventory. In this case, I've changed the color back to white and texture has become "granite" from the SL library (when you click the texture mini-window, you get a search feature for your inventory and library):

Move your item and stretch it:

  • To position an item, choose "position" from the build window and drag your item around:

  • To stretch it, choose the round "stretch" button in the top of the build window. Note that the colored corners shown stretch a side (or both sides, if you have that checkbox selected). The white corners stretch the entire item, making it larger.  I have trouble making items smaller with the white corners. I tend to use the colored corners to make an item shrink:
