Burning Life 08--last day

This project will enable students to travel to an event in small groups.  This will take their interaction with others in SL to a different level of detail, and it will provide data for the final research project.  I hope that you will visit the "Burning Life" Festival that runs Oct. 17-25. Like Robbie Dingo's "Starry Night" tribute, after one week, Burning Life is destroyed. Gone.

One pic from 2008 appears above, from a dance event that spilled out onto the grounds after live music at the main tent. A slide show of some cool "Burner" shots runs at the bottom of this page.

Some brave 103 students got out of their wimpy "comfort zones" last year and went to Burning Life. Will you be that brave?  This assignment will test your courage before you make such a choice. Note that Burning Life is policed by "Rangers" from Linden Lab, so it's not exactly "anything goes." When you arrive at the festival, you'll want your sound on, and you'll want to chat with any greeters to find out who's who and how you can get assistance. Wear old jeans and a T...no ball gowns or tuxes for the virtual desert. You may get some cool freebies from the staff, too. Look for their tags to be sure you are dealing with BL events folks.

The assignment takes two parts. For the first blog post, you should note an event you plan to attend with at least one classmember. To pick, use:

  • Burning Life Main Page and Events Schedule (see if you can catch my friend Olivia Hotshot's art exhibit, too; I will add a direct teleport link here soon). NOTE NOTE NOTE: times are given for events in Pacific Coast time. Add 3 hours to figure out when it would be in Richmond.

Non "Burner" events:

  • New World Notes' events listings (Chestnut's choices are particularly good)
  • The SL events list but note well that some adult-rated events may be listed; I advise discretion in such cases.

Make sure of the dates so you have the week to come! Note why you picked that event and what you hope to learn about the virtual world.  There's no other "claim" to this part; that will come in part two.

When you go: don't forget you are "noobs" and anyone looking at your profile will know it. Lots of experienced residents, however, love to help newcomers. Some etiquette to consider, however; don't IM-bomb or chat-bomb a room with a lot of "I'm a student studying SL! Can you help me?"  Burners at that festival can get cranky if you utter the word "game" about SL; they yelled at me last  year :)  For them, hours of work went into building an arts/music/dance event.

When you do ask a question at an event, it may take a while for someone to answer; you cannot tell how many IMs they are trying to answer (I often have three friends IMing me at once, when I first log in).

Wait for an avatar to greet you or a place to open in the conversation where it's natural to introduce yourself.  See the Getting Started guide for more advice on etiquette and IM.

For the second post, post to your blog at least one photograph from the event. Then note what you learned about SL. Did you get your questions answered (whether or not you actually asked them)?  What did you learn about the business, educational potential, social life, or cultural rules for the virtual world?

Here's a dash of "Burner" culture for you to savor:
