For this short project, each group member should identify an area of interest in SL and conduct an interview with at least one avatar. Mininum length is 1000 words and you must properly space and format the interview. You will want to keep a chat and IM transcript for this assignment. This is an example as to what a well-formatted interview should look like:
Iggy and Beeble meet and interview the editors of FreeLife Magazine (2051 words)
Your goals:
- Identify a general topic in SL about which you would like to know more: why avatars spend time in SL, what their favorite places are, what bothers them most in SL, and so on. You may, of course, go to locations from our scavenger-hunt or related to your final topic and also ask some questions specific to the final project. By the way, artists and other creative people usually enjoy sharing their passion for their work.
- Include at least two snapshots of you conversing with your interviewee(s). If you conduct the entire interview at a distance using IM, then take snaps of yourself in SL, preferably at a site related to the person you contact.
- You may talk to more than one interviewee, but be sure your resulting interview maintains its focus. And you may work on this project in several stages until the major project comes due. I expect you to do as much as you can, however, by the week of Oct. 20.
- I'd suggest our class mentors as subjects, but the difficulty here involves finding a mutually convenient time to talk. Instead, a commercial or educational site may provide on-site helpers (or you can right-click any item, using the edit tool, to find an owner and creator).
- Don't expect most folks you IM at random to respond, however. It would be best to find a site such as IBM's Island that has on-call assistants who will reply to IMs. Group members should collaborate about how to find subjects for the interview.
- Welcome Areas and Telehubs in SL are full of people, not all of them nice, but all of them chatty. Give it at try when all else fails.
