You may find that by the due date you have not completed all the tasks...and that is fine. This is an ongoing project that will continue for several weeks (and can be reported in several blog-posts).

The object of this assignments will be to get you fluent with:

  • Taking snapshots in SL and getting the files to your blog
  • Practicing basics of graphic-design and close-up photography in composition (Color, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity, and the Rule of Thirds)
  • Finding locations
  • Practicing movement and teleportation
  • Logging chat and IMs, then editing and incorporting direct quotations and using paraphrases (essential for later research)
  • Bonus: Earning Linden Dollars (fool that I am, I'm paying you...)

You will learn lots of other skills, but one of the best aspects is it GETS YOU TO READ the Getting Started in SL handbook. I've salted it with scavenger-hunt prizes.  Start reading! Start hunting! Make Linden Dollars! Buy some hair, a car, a hat, and some shoes: just go wild, okay?

Process:

Each student will be given a folder of landmarks.  Once you are comfortable with the orientation island experience, and go to the mainland, I'll select one landmark from the folder for each of your groups, and say "GO!"

Each writer must visit the location and take a picture of him or herself (no screen captures!) and post it to his or her blog. Your avatar will get 50 Linden dollars when you post your photo.

I will also send each group instructions for how you will compete with the others, beyond this first task.  There will be cash prizes for the first person in each group to get a snapshot posted and notify me by e-mail.

Other cash prizes will go to the writers who complete other tasks in the "hunt." Even for free, I love taking snapshots and saving them for later use. That's me, in a top hat created by class mentor Cynthia Barley, cruising the streets of virtual New Orleans. Soon it will be your turns.
